View Full Version : Darius should go to Europe
Terraholm 07-19-2008, 03:19 PM http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/53654/20080718/q_woods_signs_two_year_deal_with_bologna/hu/
Qyntel Woods, a former first round pick of the Portland TrailBlazers, has
signed with Fortitudo Bologna in Italy for a two year contract worth approx.
$2.2 million.
The deal was confirmed to RealGM's Christopher Reina by Andy Bountogianis,
Director of Worldwide Basketball for Mark Termini Associates, the agency
that represents Woods.
Woods played for Olympiakos last season where he averaged 12.5 points per
game.

Sources say all 30 teams were notified this week by league memorandum that
the drug which earned Portland Trail Blazers castoff Darius Miles a 10-game
suspension to start next season -- if Miles can find a job -- is the
appetite suppressant Phentermine.
A weight-loss drug, basically.

I wasn't aware that Miles needed to lose weight!

He gained a lot when he was out of action with the knee surgery rehabing
over a year.

Bennies are bennies, no matter what they say to try to rationalize them.
They used to call them greenies in MLB & the NFL, but it's still just speed
by another name.
That said, I hope DMiles gets his cranked up ass overseas & never darkens
our door again.
Go Blazers !

True phentermineis are pretty similar to amphetamines. But we were all
surprised at how fast he lost the weight last summer so that likely was his
motive. And not like he was playing.
I doubt that it will be a problem to a GM as a risk consideration like
steroids would have been.

Not me, I hope he gets another run in the nba.
A lot of players have done a lot worse than Miles. Partly the wrong place
and time for him. So the blazers have 15 mil instead of 24 next summer
under the cap...that is plenty to go shopping and they still have to hand
out some big contracts at home.

I agree! I can't claim to be a huge Miles fan but the bottom line is
he wasn't playing and was rehabbing. I would think some team will
take a flyer on him, maybe with a minimum contract with possibility
for bonuses for meeting certain goals. Also maybe periodic drug
testing.

Just the Vet's minimun contract. He might have trouble getting a guaranteed
one before they all are guaranteed Jan 10th.
He is suspended the 1st 10 games so that is bad. The team will have to give
that part to nba/nbpa charity...

Strictly up to the league with absolutely no team involvement and he is
already in the anti-drug program.
He will be tested very regularly.

So, if he plays in the NBA does it cost us more than if he plays in Euro?
I'm not a huge Miles hater, although I haven't been totally happy with his
stay in PDX, but my main concern is what's best for the Blazers & clearing
his contract off our books completely would be the best.
Go Blazers !

Only goes back on the cap if an NBA team. And that is after 10 games.
Likely does not count the suspended games in the so make it after 20. With
the vet minimun offset the cap amount would be about 7.8 mil instead of 9.
By waiving him before the end of last season with the disabled player
retirememnt they have already saved 9 mil in tax, plus should get some back,
about 3 mil I think. They have to reapply next year if he does not play.
If he plays in Europe then they still get whatever he makes offset his
salary, but that would not effect the cap just Allen's wallet.

Like I said they can live with being 15 or 16 mil under the cap next year.
Why would they want to pay a free agent more than that anyway and then
start handing out max extensions?
So I will go with what is best for Miles...
Miles has paid enough for his transgressions, he has worked hard to come
back when he had no need to, so I say let him see if he can rehab his
reputation as well as his game.

I changed my mind.
The insurance part I had not thought about. I have emailed Larry Coon to see
if he knows if the league insurance would still be paying 80%.
If so that may be as much why they are fighting his comeback as the cap and
tax. If the insurance is paying he is costing them "only" 1.8 mil a year.
Continuing the premise Miles playing 10 games would add the 7.2 mil the
insurance is paying, minus about 1 mil set-off from the other team.
Then about 7.5 million in tax if they are barely under, minus the 3 million
or so they would have got back from other teams. That goes from 1.8 mil to
18.5 for 16.7 difference in the bottom line... I would not even wish that on
Allen for a player not playing for him.
But the insurance is another reason the other GMs might not sign him. The
leagues plan can excluded a very few players plus a few body parts. They
might not cover him ...nah... more likely save those exclusions for players
that make more.
