View Full Version : THE NEXT ONE TO GO
RICHARD BINIEK 07-09-2008, 03:29 AM I doubt this will upset anyone in the group, the next Athletic to move
on just may be Huston Street. He is due to be arbitration-eligible in the
offseason. What kind of trade bait he would be remains to be seen, as few
see him as a lights out closer.Other pitchers that may be on the move at

Justin may also be next to go since he's asking for a long term contract.
This is the A's MO with Billy Beane, when a pitcher gets good TRADE HIM!

I don't blame Beane as much as I blame ownership...they just will not
commit to a large payroll, so he has to gut other teams minor league
system to remain competitive. It is not a situation unique to the
Athletics, small and mid market teams follow the same MO, THE Indians
with Sabathia, the Twins with Santana etc.I do wish Beane would include
some offense in these trades, though, ...seems like its all about
pitching with him. Richard

Exactly. As soon as a A's pitcher becomes good, Beane trades him.
Tim Hudson went 11-2 as a rookie in 1999. In 2000 he was 20-6. During the
next three years with the A's he won 18, 15, and 16. But Husdon wasn't
"good" during any of those five years. Then in 2004 he won just 12. That's
the year Hudson became "good" and caused Beane to trade him before the 2005
season.
Mark Mulder dang near won the Cy Young in 2001 (he came in second in the
voting), won 19 in 2002, and despite injuries won 15 and had a career-low
ERA of 3.15 in 2003. But he wasn't "good" until he was traded before the
2005 season. Yes, he nearly won the Cy Young in 2001, but didn't become
"good" until three years later.
Dan Haren joined the A's in 2005. That year, he broke into the top ten
among AL pitchers in innings, strikeouts, and complete games, going 14-12
with a 3.73 ERA. But he wasn't "good". No, he became good in 2007, which
prompted Beane to trade him before the 2008 season.
So very correct.

And Blanton, too! His nearly 5 ERA represents him becoming good,
apparently!
I'm quite amazed. Beane's doing a proper rebuild, not a half-ass one,
yet many A's fans are, in essence, arguing that the A's should be run
like the Orioles or Pirates, forgetting long-term goals in order to
squeeze out a few more wins in a meaningless season.

No season is meaningless when you are four games out at the All-Star
break.
Oh wait, I mean, six games out because Huston Street sucks!
Somehow Billy Beane has traded his three best starters and his best
hitter over the last eight months and managed to IMPROVE this team.
Haren, Robertson, Swisher, Harden, Gaudin and Blanton turned into
Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland, Greg Smith, Aaron
Cunningham, Chris Carter, Fautino DeLoSantos, Gio Gonzalez, Ryan
Sweeney, Matt Murton, Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, Josh Donaldson,
Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman and Matt Spencer.
Crazy.

It's not something you say to the public, but the organizational focus
of the team is 2010-2012. Wins this season are a nice side benefit for
the team, but the team isn't going to hurt the long-term plan in any way
for wins this year.
