Bloomfield Hills native Alissa Czisny, who won a bronze
medal at the 2007 U.S. figure skating championships, is
expected to compete at Patterson Ice Center this weekend
in the 10th annual Grand Rapids Open Figure Skating
Championships.
Czisny, who trained at the Detroit Skating Club, was
fifth after the short program at last year's U.S.
championships, but she won the free skate, took the
bronze and earned the final spot on the U.S. team that
competed at the world championships in Tokyo.
Two members of the Greater Grand Rapids Figure Skating
Club will compete against Czisny in the Senior Ladies
division at the Grand Rapids Open, which marks the
opening of figure skating's competitive summer season.
The Senior Ladies are scheduled to skate the short
program at noon Friday and the long program at 12:10
p.m. Saturday.
"It will be great skating," said April Treado, the
skating director for the GGRFSC. "Alissa Czisny
was a member of the World Team and there are a couple of
girls from our club who will be skating against her."
Caledonia High School senior Chelsea Morrow and Catholic
Central senior Lynzee Broussard will skate against
Czisny.
"Skaters of all ages will be competing this weekend,
from young kids who are just starting out to adults.
They will be of all different levels of ability too.
There will be singles and pairs, boys and
girls."
The Grand Rapids Open is expected to feature about 40
members of the GGRFSC.
"We have always hosted this in the summer because the
kids are out of school and they are able to
train all season," Treado said. "This is the beginning
of the competition season."
Programs at the 2008 Grand Rapids Open will be skated
for the 2009 competitive season and will be judged
according to the International Judging System.

Treado said. "They will be of all different levels of
