A group of local ice skaters will take to the ice against
figure skaters from across the globe.
In a combination of ice skating and theatre a group of
Charlottesville area skaters will compete in the first
ever national Theatre on Ice competition in Burlington,
Vermont.
"I've been to new jersey a lot and New York, but never to
Vermont, never that far north. I think it's gonna be fun,
but hope it's not too cold," skater, Emily Kivick said.
Ice skaters are used to the cold, but at the competition
later this week they’re hoping to bring a little heat to
the ice.
"It is actually skating history for this type of
discipline, it's very new to the United States," skating
director, Lindsay Tilley said.
Originating in Europe, the discipline was originally
called as ballet on ice.
"It's a group of skaters any where between 8 to up to 30
skaters that come together with all different talents and
abilities to create a story, a thought or and idea,"
Tilley explained.
After forming last November, the Charlottesville Theatre
on Ice team chose to head to Vermont to compete against
11 other national and international teams.
"It's been really great to see the older guys act as role
models to the little ones," Tilley said.
"The team environment is really refreshing, it's really
great to have people around you and motivating you,"
skater, Katie Shepherd said.
Charlottesville's team will perform a long program and a
short program to a variety of music with elaborate
costumes and props.
"It's about the 1940's and like a train station it's
pretty cool," Kivick said. "I like to do the face
expressions and really act it out."
Win or loose, team members say they're thrilled to be
taking part in a historic competition.
"For us, just to get there and have everyone show up and
skate their best would be gold for us," Tilley said.
The team has spent the last several months fundraising
and collecting donations to raise money for their trip.
They leave Charlottesville Wednesday morning for the
three day competition.
