View Full Version : Sonics and City settle out of court...they are off to OKC
Terraholm 07-03-2008, 12:49 AM http://www.nwcn.com/topstories/stories/NW_070208SSB_seattle_sonics_verdict_preview_TP.186424fd.html
SEATTLE - The City of Seattle and the owners of the SuperSonics have reached
a settlement on the KeyArena lease lawsuit, according to the judge who heard
the case.
Judge Marsha Pechman confirmed the settlement in an online posting
Wednesday.
Citing a City Hall source, the SeattleTimes reports the SuperSonics will
leave Seattle as part of the agreement. In exchange, the city would receive
up to $75 million -- less if the city gets another NBA team.
Both Mayor Greg Nickels and Sonics owners are set to hold simultaneous press
conferences at 5 p.m. More details are expected then.
"To have a bad relationship between the city and the tenants of KeyArena,
the Sonics, playing there for two more years. that would be a bad scenario,"
said former Sonic James Donaldson. "I think a settlement probably lends to
the team moving on to Oklahoma City pretty quickly."
The co-founders of Save Our Sonics say they were told to meet with Mayor
Greg Nickels and Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis at 4:15 p.m. for what was described
as an urgent meeting.
ans were airing their feelings on a KING5.com sports blog, where Jake
Bogaards wrote: "Four generations of Sonics fans in my family. I'm brought
to tears by this news. RIP Seattle Supersonics."
Commenter Martin wrote: "I hope Clay Bennet and the other new owners have to
pay through the nose and lose money on their investment."
The Sonics are trying to get out of the final two years of their lease at
KeyArena and move to Oklahoma City. The city sued after the team's owners
filed for arbitration last summer.
During six days of testimony last month, both attorneys for the City of
Seattle and the Sonics ownership marched out economists, city leaders,
KeyArena officials and one Sonics fan to talk about the financial, cultural
and emotional aspect of the team to Seattle, as well as to go through the
language of the lease signed after the arena's renovation in 1994.
But the most dramatic testimony involved the e-mails between Sonics owners
and others indicating the team was talking about moving away from Seattle as
soon as two months after completing the purchase of the team in 2006 - this
despite a promise to negotiate in good faith on a new arena for the Sonics
for twelve months. Sonics majority owner Clay Bennett insisted in court he
was still negotiating in good faith.
On the other side, Sonics attorneys feel they have shown the city had
unclean hands and was involved in a plot to force the Sonics owners to sell
by making it too expensive for them, both litigiously and in the public eye.
The city denies having previous knowledge of the so-called "poisoned well"
plan, but the Sonics' legal team questioned how two entities who had the
same goal could go forward without knowing what each other was doing.
Former Sonics owner Howard Schultz, the man who sold the Sonics to Clay
Bennett and the Professional Basketball Club, is also suing for breach of
contract. Part of the sale included a promise by Bennett for 12 months of
good faith efforts to secure an arena before talking about moving the team.
Schultz is asking for the 2006 sale to be rescinded and to have the team
held in trust until new local owners can be found.
The Seattle Times reports that lawsuit is still set to go forward regardless
of the settlement.
The Sonics say KeyArena is not a viable NBA facility and adds that
disagreements with the city have hurt the team's bottom line.
The NBA has already approved the Sonics move to Oklahoma City, but it's
contingent on the completion of the litigation.
Some Oklahoma City officials have also threatened to sue if the Sonics don't
move there. The team has signed a lease for the Ford Center to begin
whenever the team moves.

Shocker, with 3 fingers in the pink
Terraholm 07-03-2008, 01:06 AM Seattle keeps the name and records and claim they will work at getting
another team.
The league has "now" said the arena is a viable nba arena. Balmer's group
is still willing to buy a team or an expansion team.
OKC pay 45 mil now and if they fix the arena and have no team in 5 years get
another 30 mil.

Yes it was nice of the league to stretch the North West past Colorado and
Minnesota to Oklahoma...
We now own half the country...

pt...east only has a couple of teams that are not on ET and then it's only

Did the guy who called himself Coz win that election someone posted
about a while back? Will he move to OKC? I remember all that trash
talking he used to post about how L.A. couldn't compare to Seattle in
terms of fan support back in 95/96.
Ken Cheng 07-03-2008, 02:07 AM Even speaking as a Lakers fan, who has seen the Seattle Supersonics as
a division rival for years (although not much in the past ten years),
it's sad to see the Sonics leave the city of Seattle. The people up
there did love their team, which enjoyed some pretty decent success
(though not that many championships, thanks in no small part to our
Lakers) during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Moreover, I have family
in Seattle (used to visit every summer when I was a kid) and in those
rare years when the Lakers didn't make it to the Finals or missed the
playoffs, the Sonics were a good second team I could get behind
(provided they didn't eliminate the Lakers in the playoffs...which
didn't happen too many times, thankfully).
I'm going to miss the whole concept of "Seattle Supersonics."
"Oklahoma City Supersonics" just won't ever sound right.

Now that the Sonics have left Seattle will we get to watch Blazer
games up here on FSN?

They won't be the Sonics -- Seattle keeps the name.
I have no idea what they'll come up with for a team name... I just hope
it's not some lame singular collective like the "Oklahoma Wind."

Minnesota has 5 east teams much closer than the nearest team in their
division..
NBA should conserve jet fuel...
Should look more like this:
Pacific Blazers, Kings, Warriors, LAL, LAC
West Central Mavs, OKC, Hornets, Grizz, Pacers
Southwest Suns, Utah, Den, Spurs and Rockets
Atlantic Raptors, Celts, knicks, Nets, Sixers,
East Central Wolves, Bucks, Bulls, Cavs, Pistons
Southeast Wizards, Bobcats, Hawks, Orlando, Heat

Can not move the west cities closer together...
Guess I can not get the T-Wolves east without screwing up an east team just
as bad. But the divisions still look better and they play a couple of games
less in the other two divisons and does help the Wolves somewhat.

play each team in your division 8 times...and only play east teams every
other year on the road (ie one year in the west next year in the east)...no
time to work out the numbers

I think it's safe to say Bombers is dead in the water.
As is the Ammonium Nitrites. Too clunky anyway. And difficult to
conveigh.
Cow Tippers?
Dust Bowlers?
Fag Hangers?
Seriously: I like the Oklahoma City Freight Train. "Go Trains!"

The league for over a year was on Bennett's side saying Key Arena revamped
was not good enough, they had to build a new arena. No public support could
be found to make that help happen from the state or city.
Yesterday the Mayor says the league told them Key with the 30 mil
improvements was still a viable NBA arena and the OKC owners have to pay
them 30 mil in 5 years if they make the improvements and do not have a team
by then.
He said the league was helping and would let them know of any opportunities
for a team for sale, moving or an expansion.
Apparently that was pure smoke either the mayor's or the leagues...
This morning Stern announces that Seattle is a great NBA city...but only if
they build a new state of the art arena...
They are not getting a team back in Key arena nor building a new one....
the city will get it's 30 mil back and the Radio and TV market will likely
be opened up to the Blazers within a year or so if not next season at least
for the broadcast 25 or so games...the cable deal is still a mess.

I honestly couldn't tell you who does the Blazer games in the Portland
area. I"m just saying as a fan that this would appear to open up the
Washington market for broadcast of Blazers games now that they are the
only team in the northwest.

That's pretty damn good! IT's hard to have perfect divisions because
some parts of the country are more spread out, but your version is
better than how the NBA divided it! Only quirk I see is the Texas
teams being split. Maybe the Mavs could move to southwest with the
other 2 texas teams and throw Denver to west central.

And since the Grizz never won anything Seattle wont have to worry

right...and I was thinking it might open it up for the Blazers fan...I

Yeah, you're probably stuck with Lakers down there in Vegas, It seems
the Lakers are your closest team, though a case could be made for the
Suns. Yeah, I hope the Blazers inherriting this bigger market will
help them get more free games, nationally televised, or whatever, it
would seem it should! That, and the fact it's an up and coming team!
