THE MAJORCAN one WILL PLAY IN THE PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS Rudy will
announce in brief that goes to the NBA By QUIQUE COMBED Was an open
secret, but still there was people in Badalona that maintained the
hope. Although not yet it is an official, Mark.com can advance that
Rudy Fernández will announce in brief (in the next days) that goes to
the NBA, as already has done to know to the DKV Joventut. Sources of
the Penya have confirmed this extreme. The Portland Trail Blazers,
team that will share with Sergio Rodriguez, will be the destiny of the
Majorcan rocket. It becomes the sixth Spaniard that will populate the
courts of the best League from the world the season 08/09.
In this manner, the second better player of the ACB complies his dream
to be gone to the NBA. To its 23 years, Fernández becomes the eighth
Spaniard of the history that manages to play in the best League of the
World.
Contract 'two plus one'
Like all novices, Rudy Fernandez is going to the NBA with two years
guaranteed and the possibility of franchising to increase the link
unilaterally third season. Due to the post when he was elected (number
24, chosen by the Phoenix Suns, who transferred their rights to the
Portland Trail Blazers), Rudy win a figure close to a million dollars,
much less than they could obtain if signed by any team Europe. Still,
the desire of the international reach of the NBA when they have
facilitated its decision.

From the Sports Ticker:
BADALONA, Spain (Ticker) -- Spain international Rudy Fernandez has confirmed
he will play for the Portland Trail Blazers next season.
The 23-year-old shooting guard, who has spent his entire career to date with
Spanish side DKV Joventut, announced the news at a press conference in
Badalona on Friday.
"It has not been easy for me to take this decision, but it is the moment to
face new challenges," Fernandez said. "Now, I have the chance to fulfill a
dream and form part of the NBA.
"I sat down with my family, and between them, my representatives and myself,
we decided that it was the best moment, just after a fantastic year in which
I have won titles with Joventut."
Fernandez, who was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the 2007 NBA Draft before
having his rights traded to Portland, will become the eighth Spaniard to
play in the NBA after Fernando Martin, Pau Gasol, Raul Lopez, Sergio
Rodriguez, Jose Manuel Calderon, Jorge Garbajosa and Juan Carlos Navarro.
Martin played for Portland in the 1980s, while Rodriguez is currently part
of the Trail Blazers' roster.
The Mallorcan-born Fernandez was a member of the Spain squad that won gold
at the 2006 FIBA World Championships and silver at the 2007 EuroBasket,
while this season he helped DKV win the Copa del Rey and the ULEB Cup.
From Reuters:
Spain shooting guard Rudy Fernandez said he was leaving local side DKV
Joventut to join the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.
"They have pushed hard for me to join them and have assured me I will be an
important figure for them," Fernandez told a news conference. "It wasn't an
easy decision to take but it is the time for a new challenge after a
fantastic year with Joventut."
The 23-year-old helped Joventut to last season's King's Cup and ULEB Cup --
Europe's second tier event behind the Euroleague -- and was voted into the
ideal starting five for the Spanish ACB league for the 2007-8 campaign.
Fernandez was a member of the Spain team that won gold at the world
championship in 2006 and silver in the European championship in 2007.
He joins up with fellow countryman Sergio Rodriguez at Portland, and becomes
the fifth Spain international in the NBA along with Rodriguez, Pau Gasol,
Jorge Garbajosa, Juan Carlos Navarro and Jose Manuel Calderon.
Fernandez will join up with Portland after the forthcoming Olympic Games in
Beijing.

For some reason, I believe that Portland had the first foreign player
to play in the NBA who didn't go to college in the US, in Martin..or
like the 1st one in a long time..right?

Who ?? Arvydas Sabonis? What about Sarunas Marciulonis? Georgi
Glouchkov for Phx. This whole discussion has again made me sad that
the fuckin' Soviet assholes deprived us of the first dozen years of
Sabonis' career. Would have loved to see him play as a young man.

It was Fernando Martin. First foreign player drafted that had not gone to
college here. Only claim to nba fame. Not memorable for the basketball at
least I only remember his story......Late 1980s. Drafted 2nd round I think
but then there were about 6 to 8 rounds.... I do not think they drafted him
must have been a trade or walk on. I think he was killed in a car wreck or
something not long after that ...

Sabonis' wife not wanting to come over and money had to do with more of it
than the russians. Sabas was playing in Spain for Real Madrid making 4 to 6
million when his rookie contract here would start at less than 1 mil.

I thought he meant play in the NBA. Didn't Oscar Schmidt get drafted
before that?

Correct. Oscar was drafted first, Martin second. Neither played in

Martin did play for the blazers. 24 games by my old media guide.
That was Dan's point. " first foreign player to play in the NBA who didn't
