LOS ANGELES-Could Jorge Garbajosa's career as a Raptor be over?
Spanish media reports suggest the Raptors are trying to engineer a buyout of
the final year of Garbajosa's contract.
"We're still working on a resolution to the entire Garbo scenario,"
Toronto's president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said today.
Garbajosa is due to make $4.25 million this season in the final year of a
three-year contract.
The Spanish media reports did not suggest the financial terms of any buyout
being talked about.
The 31-year-old Garbajosa suffered a grisly leg and ankle injury in a game
in March, 2007 that set in motion the events that have led to this point.
He missed the last 15 games of the 2006-07 seasons and all but seven games
of the 2007-08 season recovering from a series of surgeries to repair the
damage.
The 6-9 forward did play for Spain in last summer's European championships,
against the wishes of the Raptors and only after the Spanish basketball
federation took out a $1 million insurance policy against him doing further
damage to his leg.
The Raptors have filed a lawsuit against the Spanish federation trying to
get some of the insurance money, although they suspended the suit last month
to try and reach a negotiated settlement.
Meanwhile, Garbajosa's Spanish compatriot, Jose Calderon, has officially
severed ties with his North American-based agent, George Bass, and is now
being represented only by his European agent, Paco Lopez Costell.
