View Full Version : Rotation, trades
ImLittleJon 06-27-2008, 09:08 PM Thinking about all the guards on the roster now, I looked back at
March and April of last year to see how the minutes got divvied up
then.
PG - Hinrich and Duhon played most - but not all - of the minutes
here. That means several minutes a game, Gordon, Hughes, or Sefolosha
was playing point. Can anyone who actually gets to watch the games
chime in on which of them it usually was?
SG - Gordon, Hughes, and Sefolosha combined for well over 48 mpg. A
little of that was at point, as noted above, but that still leaves
like 15 mpg where we played with three guards on the floor at the same
time.
SF - Deng got pretty much all the SF time that didn't go to a third
guard. Note that his mpg dropped from 36:30 in March to 29:06 in
April, and there is a corresponding increase in guard minutes.
PF - When Gooden was out in April, Thomas and Nocioni split time here
about 60/40. In March, Gooden played about 2/3 of the game and
Nocioni played the rest, plus a minute or two at SF. So Thomas's
March minutes must have come at C (or else Nocioni's did).
C - In April, Noah played almost 2/3 of the game, and Gray played
almost 1/3. In March, they each played a few minutes less to
accommodate Thomas's (or Nocioni's) time at the 5.
So, let's consider a few trade scenarios:
1) Hinrich is traded. This leaves Rose as the only true PG. I don't
have a lot of faith in Gordon/Hughes/Sefolosha at point, and Pax
doesn't sound like he's planning to play Rose 40+ mpg, so I'd think
we'd need to get a backup quality PG in return, or else re-sign Duhon,
which seems unlikely. So trading Hinrich doesn't do much to free up
the logjam at guard, unless another guard is part of the deal.
2) Gordon is sign-and-traded. This is complicated. To make it work,
Gordon would need to find some team out there that thinks he is worth
not only the $10M+ salary he wants, but also some player(s).
3) Hughes is traded. His main value is is huge, expiring contract.
Which, since it expires after _next_ season, makes him more appealing
to other teams a year from now, after Reinsdorf has paid off some of
that huge contract. Until then, I have a hard time envisioning any
team wanting him enough to give up comparable salary.
In the event that Pax does swing some sort of trade, what would we
want in return? At SF, I have a lot of faith in Deng. The only way
I'd want a SF in return would be if we were sign-and-trading Deng, and
it would have to be a pretty darn attractive SF. At PF, Gooden is in
the final year of his deal and probably doesn't figure in long term
plans, although Thomas does. At C, Noah looks to be the starter and
play the bulk of the time this year, with Gray being a serviceable
backup. I don't see any reason for Pax to give up on either of them
yet. So PF is really the only position we'd be looking to improve,
and it would almost certainly involve moving Gooden as part of the
trade.
Realistically, though, I expect there to be no further moves. Leading
to a rotation something like:
PG Hinrich/Rose (later Rose/Hinrich)
SG Gordon/Hughes/Sefolosha/Hinrich
SF Deng/Gordon/Hughes/Sefolosha
PF Gooden/Thomas/Nocioni
C Noah/Gray/Thomas
In other words, just replacing Duhon with Rose and carving a few extra
minutes for Rose out of the other guards. And counting on improvement
from Noah/Thomas/Deng.

Not considering $$$$, I think the best point guard of this litter of
guards was Duhon. When Gordon was playing point it was a miracle if
he could get it over half court without losing it, and Hinrich
dribbled around like my Roomba vacuum cleaner looking for a patch of
kitty litter on the rug. I don't remember Sefolosha or Hughes playing
point except by accident. A combination of Rose and Sefolosha might
make be a happy Bulls watcher.

the guy i really want to see gone is hughes but like you said, he's
still on the books for 2 more yrs with his ridiculous salary, so i
don't see that happening. i'm so pissed pax didn't get expiring
contracts for wallace (who's FA signing i was dead set against from
day 1). i don't think we can afford to pay both hughes and gordon big
money, since they pretty much do the same thing, so i think it's
likely gordon's gone in a sign and trade. i think he'd help a guy like
lebron a lot but we already too cleveland's garbage already. they
*have* to clean some house, imo, after what happened last year.
i could also see hinrich moving, if they can find a deal. i really
think they fucked up his game by trying to play him at SG. he's not a
SG, imo. i still can't believe they hired del negro. they needed a vet
coach who'd command respect. i have a feeling they might walk all over
vinnie, like they did with the interim coach. it's weird that no one
seemed very interested in avery johnson. i thought for sure someone
would snatch him up. i was hoping it'd be us. is tyrus ever going to
amount to anything or is he a bust? jesus, our whole team is littered
with lottery picks (hinrich, gordon, deng, thomas, noah, thabo (i
think), gooden (even tho we didn't pick him, he was like a #4
overall)...and they're turned out to be disgraces. where did hughes go
in the draft, btw?

Hughes was the #8 pick in the 1998 NBA draft, chosen by
Philadelphia. Thabo was a #13 pick by Philly traded to the Bulls
for their #16 pick, Rodney Carney (who?).
I don't think Hinrich is a point guard, so where else do you play
him beside shooting guard? As to the problem of Hughes, why not
tell him to stay home for the next two seasons? His skills are
declining and I don't think he is a positive role model for the
team. Just consider his contract a sunk cost and don't further
ruin your team by having him play for it.

Do you think Hughes knows that he's an albatross? Or do you think he
thinks he's fairly compensated? I would like Paxson to remind every
day in practice, in a loud and public way, that he's a huge waste of
money. It won't drive him off. I just want to know that he knows that
we know.
