John Sevastakis Commends Skating Center's Program
Expansion
TOMS RIVER - Councilman at large John Sevastakis, who is
the liaison to the Recreation Department, said the
plethora of programs now offered at the Winding River
Skating Center further fulfills the township's purpose to
offer its residents top-of-the-line recreational
enjoyment.
"Since the hire of Hockey Director Dean Marusic, I have
seen the skating center benefit from his knowledge,
experience and expertise," said Councilman Sevastakis.
Thrilled to be the hockey director at the skating center,
Marusic, who joined the staff last year, immediately
implemented innovative programs and leagues that have
increased revenue during the off-season while creating
more recreational opportunities for area youth and
adults.
"The extra programs keep the kids on the ice and active,"
said Marusic, who has spearheaded age-specific skating
leagues for intermediate, middle school, high school and
college level skaters, which run all year-through. "It is
very difficult to keep busy in the summertime, while some
area rinks suffer, but with these programs, the skating
center is generating revenue and recreation."
Recreation Director Eric Schubiger noted that the skating
center is a prime example of the unique opportunities
accessible to township residents.
"Toms River offers so many varied recreational
experiences," said Schubiger. "I would look far and wide
to find the recreational opportunity of being able to
skate on ice and then drive 10 minutes over to Ortley
Beach and be able to play in the sand."
Craig Lyons, rink manager, said the 30 year old facility
has always been filled to capacity every season.
Through the last three generations, the rink's popularity
with the public, figure and icehockey skaters inevitably
resulted in the formation of the 2004 Toms River Ice
Committee, said Lyons, adding the committee conducted a
feasibility study that proved residents would benefit
from an indoor ice rink.
"Now residents can skate year-around," said Lyons of the
Winding River Skating Center indoor ice-rink.
According to Sevastakis, the facility's success is a
direct result of the staff's commitment to creating a
skating center that Toms River residents, of all ages,
can be proud to call their own.
"Through the years, the staff has been put to the task
through their hard work and dedication to create one of
the best skating centers in the state," said Councilman
Sevastakis
