The newest addition to the crime blotter is none other than
Joakim Noah. He was arrested for drinking alcohol on a public
sidewalk and possession of marijuana. Not the biggest deal as
far as infractions go, but it is interesting that the cops didn't
let off the local hero (he was in Gainesville, home of the
University of Florida) with just a warning or a wink and a nod.

Who's next to run afoul of the law?

At what point does "You're drunk" turn into "We're going to search you"? Is
that normal behaviour?

Anyway, I couldn't care less about this. It's off season, the guy's allowed
a little fun.

Agreed. As to your question, that's a mixed bag. If said person is
belligerent, you need to check for weapons. However, in the USA I
believe in freedoms of privacy that pretty much no longer exist even
though the founding fathers wanted it that way. If they want to
search, they can use the slippery slope of probable cause.

As I stated, not the biggest deal. I understand that a large
percentage (upwards of 50%) of NBA players smoke marijuana. From
what my son tells me, a large percentage (10 to 25%) of the kids
at his high school 60 miles southwest of Chicago smoke weed too.

That's probably a conservative number. I think the "war on drugs" is
a big waste of money and time. That is probably a conversation we can
have at another time.

OOOOOOOH ... he was drinking and had a joint on him!
OOOOOOOH!

Give me a break.
Marijuana is no worse than Budweiser and should be legal.

The Bulls better not discipline or fine Noah, I don't care if that shit is
illegal.

The government can steal your property and sell it.
If you are driving your car with expired tags, they can pull you over,
confiscate and impound your vehicle and then auction it off to the highest
bidder.
If you can not afford to pay the DMV imposed fines ... you're screwed and
your car will be sold by the government.
Isn't that nice? Hitler would be proud.

HUGE waste of money!
Not to mention taking away freedom of choice!
Goddamit, if I want to smoke a doobie and snort a line of coke ... I should
be able to do so in the comfort of my home, without fear of the federal
government breaking down my door and stealing every thing I own and selling
it on E-bay!

By the way, that 48" Sony Plasma TV, serial #006758923570 is mine!
And I want it back!

Agreed. but... they do sign a contract....

Teams have nothing to do with discipline for drugs or the anti-drug program.
Nor can they talk about what is being done, nor would they be informed
unless it leads to a supension.

It is the league/NBPA that deals with it.

Nothing will show discipline wise unless he is convicted or pleads guilty or
no contest to either charge. Even guilty to the booze charge may be 1 game
minimum suspension by the league. Many states will drop the charges if
they go though some program or do not get caught again for 6 months or
something.
Hire Damon Stoudamire's lawyer, three times he got the charges dropped...no
nba suspensions.

As for the now known use of pot Noah will likely be called in for a test by
the league/union.
If he flunks or pleads guilty or no contest in court or is convicted he
will be entered in the anti-pot program. First step is meet with the NBPA
medical director within 5 days and set up a testing program.
No other penalties are involved with 1st strike, just enter program... 2nd
strike enter the program again if out of it and 25K fine.... 3rd strike is
enter program and a 5 game suspension....
And after that 10 games, 15 games, etc for each strike for
pot......convictions, flunked nba pot tests, refused tests, missed meetings
with the director etc.

I just read a quote from Noah's father Yannick. He basically says "why
can't a grown man walk down the street drinking a beer?" Why indeed.
What a country I live in.

Speaking of which, I am writing this from the Spider House cafe in
Austin, TX, which is a pretty cool place in a pretty cool city. I miss
the slow decay of the South, humidity melting your jeans into your
boxers and sweat soaking your boxers into your butt. Seriously. What
is summer without women in sun dresses and cicadas chirping overhead?
There are a few things the Bay Area lacks.

Anyway, I'm staying in this weird place called Hardin House. It's a
complex of houses near the university, a girl's dorm during the school
year and a bed and breakfast during the summer. The kicker? It's where
Jenna Bush roomed her freshman year. There is every possibility I am
sleeping on the same bed where a succession of frat boys made Ms. Bush
a woman.

It's kinda hot.

Oh, you absolutely must try Amy's ice cream while you're in Austin.
It's like Cold Stone Creamery, but much, much better. And if you get
the right server, you'll get a little show with your ice cream. Some
of them will hand you the cup, turn their back to you, and then flip
the ice cream over their shoulder into the cup in your hand. Others
will sing or dance and such if you tip them.

You might also want to check out the bats by the bridge (not sure
whether this is the right time of year, so check with a local).
Another thing I saw when I was out there was this little place called
the Snake Pit. This crazy old coot who used to run the San Antonio
Zoo or something lives on the outskirts, right by a highway. He's got
a building with a whole bunch of snakes, and some snapping turtles and
stuff, and he'll pick up and show you the snakes. He'll also give you
some libertarian (hence, "crazy" ;-) ) political handouts, but that's
a small price to pay.

Don't get me started. Everything you said is true, and it is only the
beginning. The masses admire the politicians that promise to take the
assets of the evil rich, and distribute to those who are "less
fortunate". That's another thing. The words they use. Less
fortunate. Conversely the rich are "lucky". No hard work. Just
lucky. Sorry, wrong forum...I could go on for HOURS on this one.

I'll look for it. The place I'm staying stocks ice cream in the fridge

I've had similar experiences at Victoria's secret when buying things
for my wife.

On your recommendation, I did this last night. It had been mentioned
to me but I was planning to blow it off as a tourist attraction. But
it was quite neat and certainly unique.

No problem. I should have given you some notice.

Let me guess: a woman was involved?

Holy crap that's a good line. I think I'll steal it.

NO, the Spurs game.....Lee's a big time Spurs fan. Oh and that was a
foul BTW...

Berry created the contact - would have been no contact if Berry hadn't moved
right.

Doesn't matter. That's a totally simple and incorrect interpretation
and inconsistent with how the game is called. Fish wasn't verticle he
was lunging forward and Barry was trying to get an open look, not
hurling his body into Fish. If Fish was straight up verticle you
would be correct. If Barry can make the case that he was trying to
avoid contact, and player is not verticle, it's automatic. BTW, the
league agreed with me. http://tinyurl.com/4njfmh

It's not like offensive guys don't create contact to get to the line.
Check Corey Maggette some time. It's Barry, not Berry.

Or maybe Sashank was subtly implying that Tim Duncan is a woman. :-)
