View Full Version : So, uh...who watches college basketball?
Marc Heiden 05-21-2008, 01:51 AM I don't watch college basketball. Turns out I should have - this
season, at least.
Who's the pick? My impression is that both Rose and Beasley are
incredible players, and it's a can't miss proposition either way.
Sentiment will probably lean towards Rose, and I have no problem with
that - I'd lean that way, too - but can anyone give personal
evaluations why - and assurances he's not Jay Williams? Does anyone
want to make an argument for Beasley? (From having watched him, what's
his position in the NBA?)
One thing I don't think you do - at this height - is trade the pick.
Had we landed at #3, I'd have happily joined the chorus there, but
it's nearly impossible to get equal value for a player of Rose/
Beasley's caliber at a rookie salary.

I saw a lot. To me Rose is head and shoulders above... Think D Wade
type player .....Beasely is a tweener...

No way is he Jay Williams. No Duke hype machine working here...He is
like D Wade or A young Chauncey Billups. Strong, athletic and smart
and tough.
Beaseley is a clear 3 and a half. tweener. good rebounder in college
but nt that big.....no comparison from the half dozen games i have
seen of both.

Rose would project to have the impact of Chris Paul or Deron Williams,
only he'll be a better defender.
Beasley is in the Amare Stoudamire/Al Jefferson realm - lots of points
and rebounds but not a great defender. Not sure if he's a passer or
not.
I would take Rose in almost any situation, but the Bulls might need
Beasley more.

More like Melo than Amare. Not long enough to be AJ.

We need a PG. It's that simple. Hinrich will function much better if
most of his minutes are at the 2, with Sefolosha to help out on
particularly tough matchups.
Assuming Rose is the pick, you gotta wonder about Gordon's future. If
you saw my other post you know Melo's in play and I think we should go
after him. How could the Nuggets pass up Deng + Gordon + Hughes for
him?
Man, D'Antoni's gotta be kickin' himself right now.
Anyone seen Crumbs's lucky pennies?

I dunno anything about these college players, but do we really need
another guard? There'd have to be some sort of trade involved to make
it work.

I would rather have Deng than Melo. There are two ends of the court.
Deng is strong defensively where Melo is very weak. Deng and Rose
and Noah and Seflosha and Thomas are a very athletic and strong
defensive bunch. A team needs identity. That is it. This will be a
athletic defensive club.

Melo's the guy you go to at the end of the game, the hoss who will
score or get fouled. We need one of them.
Deng's an efficient if brittle player. He'll never be a superstar.
He'll never be the man.

I see Deng more like Stephen Jackson type player. Melo has something
missing. He's a black hole. He disappears in the playoffs. Rose
will hit the shot at the end of the game. Trust me. This is one of
the biggest draft coup's in the history of the lottery. You got a
legit superstar, finisher, defensive stopper, floor leader.....

Quantity, not quality: not one of the group is a championship point guard,
not one is a championship 2.
Hinrich, Gordon (in a sign-and-trade) and Sefalosha are tradeable, Hughes
probably isn't - altho I'd hesitate to trade Sefalosha.
Have to go after Rose and let the rest of the chips fall where they may.
No trade? Start Rose and Sefalosha, bring Hinrich and Gordon / Hughes off
the bench.

YES YES....Absolutely correct.
Get the best player.

Neither Paul Pierce nor Ray Allen are considered very strong
defenders, and that's working out pretty well for Boston.

Disagree. I think Pierce is a very good defender. Allen, not so
much.

BTW, they were tops in the league in defense this year. Those guys
must be alright on the D. By contrast, Denver had Marcus Camby in the
middle, comparable to KG on the defensive end. Yet they could stop
nobody from scoring, so Camby had no help, KG did.
