View Full Version : A superstar for pennies on the dollar

It's in the news today that Denver wants to trade Melo.

This is our chance.

Yes, he is a fan of weed and stray guns have been known to turn up in
his luggage, but he's never raped or killed anyone. He's the guy to
build around. I feel kinda stupid for not thinking about it before. A
young, healthy superstar just entering the prime of his career. A post
scorer in an era where there are no post scorers. Surrounded by
bizarro talent (J. R. Smith? Nene? Ball-grabbing Reggie Evans?) and a
lunatic coach, he hasn't pouted or stabbed anyone on the back or asked
for a traded. No, he's simply gone to work and raised his numbers
every year. I see only good things for him going forward.

The trade I heard was Melo and Camby to NJ for Richard Jefferson and
spare parts. We can beat that in any number of ways. Deng's the
cornerstone of the trade, of course -- with Melo we have no need for
him. Throw in a salary -- Larry Hughes if they'll take him, otherwise
Drew Gooden. Next year's number one. That should get it done.

More info. Denver's apparently trying to shed payroll. Gooden's got
one year left on his deal. So Deng + Gooden for Anthony makes a lot of
sense. Gooden's a useful player, so I'd rather see Hughes go, but I'd
still make this deal in a heartbeat.

I don't think Denver does that deal. It's somewhat equitable, but
it's a PR nightmare for Denver. They need to bring back an all-star
if they are giving up a 25PPG player. Even if Denver had to give up
Melo PLUS another player(s) they need another allstar in return or the
#1 pick and a starter.

I think most teams would prefer Deng over Jefferson given their ages
and contracts. Both are borderline Eastern Conference all-stars when
healthy.

I agree, especially because of the contracts. However, the trade
sometimes becomes one sided when the contracts are out of whack. It's
a lot easier to make the Jefferson for Melo trade than the Deng for
Melo trade. If you send back someone with Deng to offset the
difference in contract, you are either sending back an overpaid piece
of shit, or a player who is paid what he is worth. In the latter
sense it would be unfair to Chicago. In the former it is unfair to
Denver unless the other player is an expiring contract. The expiring
contract is VERY valuable to Chicago in this day and age. Consider
that you are going to have to pony up for Thomas if you plan to keep
him (he may improve dramatically this year), then you have to pay for
the #1 pick, and extend him in two to three years, plus Seflosh. I'd
rather keep Deng and an expiring contract to give the team flexibility
unless a REAL superstar becomes available like Garnett was. I am just
not able to reconcile that with Melo yet. Maybe I'm biased, but I
think he's way way way overrated.
