R.Scott 06-17-2008, 02:09 AM Bavasi is GONE GONE GONE
See ya ... I doubt he could put together a winning team in single A.
Now Maybe we can get someone worth a damn that knows talent.
jessica_smith_nyc 06-17-2008, 03:40 AM I think we need to trade Sexson, Batista, Vidro, and Washburn to
start. Maybe bring Clement back up and put him in as the everyday
catcher. Ichiro is back in right again so maybe bring up another
outfielder. The real challenge this season is to avoid 100 losses and
be the first team to do that while spending over $100 million.

1) Make a list of baseball decision-makers that would seriously consider
making a trade for any of those guys.
2) Are any names left after you cross off the ones who already work for the
Mariners?
If Pelekoudas' Trade-Hotline phone is ringing, it'll be GMs asking about
Felix, Bedard, Morrow, Clement ... they won't be asking about low-upside
under-performers with mill-stones for contracts (unless maybe Seattle
agrees to eat most of the mill-stone).

Completely disagree. The real challenge is to make savvy moves to build a
legitimate playoff contender for 2009 or 2010 without squashing the life
out of the farm system. Holding on to players that may have trade value
just to avoid 100 losses is nuts. If there are deals on the table that make
the team better for next year, this year's projected loss total simply
shouldn't be a factor. I don't care if they lose 110 games in 2008 if
they're back in the playoff hunt within the next two years.

falcon83 06-21-2008, 04:51 PM Is there a website that lists how long the Mariners contracts run. With
most of those listed the players will be paid until the contract expires
which is a huge burden.
One thing the team needs to think about is trading Ichiro. Even with his
large salary there would be a market for his services. He would bring in
younger players to meet the need of a five year rebuilding process. In five
years Ichiro's value will not be that great.
Also why stop the firing there, believe Howard Lincoln should go for not
acting sooner.

There's a link on the USS Mariner website.

It's very unlikely that Ichiro will be traded due to the Japanese connection
with Yamauchi/Nintendo.

Thanks for the link.
Not as bad as I thought, after 2009 considerable money is freed up.
Hopefully the chosen GM will actually have an eye for talent and value
unlike Bavasi.
The Carlos Silva contract hurts but jettisoning Sexson and Vidro at year end
will free up some cash for next year. After all that was given up for
Bedard he is only under contract through this year? Hope he stays healthy
so
he can be dealt at the deadline. It is unlikely he would want to stick
around through the rebuilding.

I also doubt he will be traded but from a team perspective this is one asset
that would return value. Trading Johjima would be tough for the same
Nintendo connections.
Ron Fowler 06-21-2008, 09:26 PM Trade Ichiro? Sure, and Felix, too. Give the fans 2 more reasons to stop
going to Safeco.
SAC 441 06-26-2008, 04:28 PM I am not 100% positive,but I don't think you can
"fire" Howard Lincoln in the traditional manner like an employee who has
a contract.He has an
ownership stake and as such, to get rid of him he would have to be
bought out by the majority ownership. You probably could do it in some
specified manner, but it would involve the executive
board committee and a board vote.

Haven't posted to this group in years (when the USS Mariner guys roamed
these places), but here I go.
I'd love to see them clean house. As Ian Furness says on the radio, it's
inexplicable why Vidro and Cairo are still on the roster, and the lost
opportunity to trade Washburn, Pelekoudas had clearly failed in what would
have been a stronger audition than what he's shown.
They need a saber guy to take over. The most successful teams have already
done so and the longer the Mariners wait, the further behind the curve
they'll be. I honestly cannot fathom that they think 2001 was a product of
doing the "little things" and playing "small ball" (stealing bases, bunting,
etc) and not symbolic of the circumstance that they lead the league in OBP
and runs scored.
Load the lineup with high OBP guys and you score more runs. It's okay to be
patient. After all, the sooner you run up the opposition's pitch count on
the starter, the greater likelyhood you face substandard middle relief. Few
teams have even passable middle relief, or else they wouldn't be middle
relievers.
At least we can all hope that someday...
