View Full Version : 2003 GP800R Drive Shaft and/or Impeller problem. Pls help diagnose.
TonyInClearwater 05-26-2008, 05:20 PM New impeller was installed about 9/2007. About 10-15 hours use since
then.
New Motor from SBT was installed just a month ago, 5-8 hours of use
since then.
Wife was riding my 2003 Yamaha GP800R. Was running fine, then
'instantly' there was high-pitched 'whining' noise.
She stopped the motor very quickly and waited for me to notice
something was wrong from shore.
I approached, started the motor, heard the noise and noticed there was
no water being shot from the nozzle.
I looked under the seat and saw that the drive shaft would spin in
what appeared to be a 'normal' fashon.
We brought the waverunner to shore and I tipped it on its side. I
looked into the intake grate and saw there was no obstructions, no
ropes or other crap.
I asked her to hit the start button, the shaft seemed to spin freely,
but not the impeller.
I asked her to give it just a little gas and as the shaft would spin
faster, the whining sound got louder and the impeller would spin, but
seemingly MUCH slower thn the shaft.
Any insight as to what might would be the problem would be
appreciated.
Also, Should I flush the motor while I figure this out should I avoid
starting the motor to minimize any damage to the impeler, wear ring,
shaft, or other components?
JBDragon 05-27-2008, 05:24 AM I would check everything starting with the connection to the Motor and just
work your way back. They're can't be to many things it could be. I'm
thinking it's the connection of the Impeller on the shaft. Possibly
striped, Cracked, Loose, that sort of thing. Can you reach in and try to
turn the impeller by hand? If you can just turn it by hand, something there
is wrong. What that could be, without looking I can only guess. I've
installed a replacement SBT motor in my jetski a few years back, the year
before that I had to basically rebuild the entire jet pump. It's also been
working great since then. If something wasn't done right, maybe worked
loose, or not put together correctly, who knows. I don't have a Yamaha but
a 1997 Kawasaki. To me is sounds like a problem with the Impeller to shaft
connection, like it's slipping somehow. Not a good thing. It's more then
likely going to have to be taken apart and looked at.

Something got in between the impeller's aft end and the stator vanes very
close behind it, like a tiny rock. This locked the impeller and sheared
its shear pin. You're right, the pump will have to come apart to replace
the broken pin or shaft or impeller.
STAY away from the lake bed!! 2' of water minimum!
I've been away from jetskis for a couple of years, now. Man, this
newsgroup just DIED!

The main place for pwc talk and info for the last few years (IMO
although there are certainly others) if you're inreterested is

I'm not a fan of Web Based Message forums all that much. It's so much
faster to scan a bunch of messages here then on the Web Based forums. I
guess they both have there's Pro's and Con's.
Shear Pin does sound like the problem. One year I sucked up a Rubber Ducky,
Yep that's right, a Rubber Ducky, in the Straight. For a Contest where the
Ducky's Raced down the water, (Well more like crawl) well they weren't
moving very well and so myself and a few others on Jetski's helped push them
along, well a loose one got sucked up into my Pump. Had to be towed back to
the launch ramp. I did get it out and it didn't cause any damage, but it
killed the motor and wouldn't start up again with it jammed up. I did this
for a couple years, but back in 1999 my duck came in Second place and I won
a Harley which I still have. I wasn't helping that time but I was out in
the water on my Jetski watching the races, and then road around for a while.
When I got home I had a message on my Machine that I won and came in second
place. They do the Rubber Ducky Races every year on the 4th of July out
in the Mare Island Straight.
