View Full Version : Lions Draft
Chuck the Cat 04-27-2008, 04:42 PM The Lions drafts have been so bad that no one pays any attention to them. Why
else would there be no posts.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl "will you marry me?" The girl said
"No." And the guy played golf and drank beer every day and lived happily
ever after.

Seeing that I thought the Lions needed OL and RB help more than DL
help, I was surprised by their two picks. Both good players but
still, there were players that might have helped the team more still
on the board. Maybe they'll redeem themselves in the 3-6th rounds. At
least they didn't draft a WR.

Actually...NOBODY drafted a wide receiver. I guess the Leos have shown that
WR early picks are pretty much tackling dummy fodder anyway, so get 'em in
the later rounds.

Any idea why the Lions felt the need to get another WR in the 5th? This
guy is going to be lucky to be a 4th receiver. Why not roll the dice on
getting a starter or reliable backup at CB, OL, DL, LB, TE, QB....

From what I've read he's a KR/PR and they do need help there.

Looks like he's played running back too. I wouldn't be surprised then if
they plan on him being a running back who'll catch passes out of the
backfield on 3rd down.
When was the last time they had a guy who could really catch the ball out
of the backfield, anyway?

Kenneth Moore is a very versatile athlete and could even play RB. They
need to develop some talent at the WR position in case they lose Roy
Williams to FA next season. Moore is also a very good punt returner.
For a 5th round pick, it wasn't so bad.

The fact that he's played a lot of RB makes me think he's going to be
mostly a receiver out of the backfield, running draws, screens, stuff
like that. That's fine, the Lions haven't done much of this stuff for
years, and if they are in fact trying to make their offense less
predictable, that's a good thing.
Still, I wish they had, somewhere, picked up another OL and QB. They
need to rebuild the OL through the draft, and doing it one guy at a time
isn't going to cut it. Also, the odds are growing for a Kitna collapse,
and putting all their faith in Stanton seems pretty dicey. Rodgers is
promising for the Packers, but they weren't afraid to get insurance at
QB. I fear the Lions will find themselves freaking out in the next year
or two looking for a QB and end up stretching by grabbing another
Harrington or Mitchell.

Seeing that the Lions allowed MORE POINTS THAN ANY NFL TEAM IN 2007,
Sir Creep is surprised by your analysis of hte team's needs......Maybe
SkippyPB can redeem himslef in his next post. I doubt it.

Yes. He is a kick returner, you dolt. Unless you expected them to
resign Troy Walters.
Jesus, after reading some of you guys' posts, do you people even KNOW
the Lions team at all? Goddamn....

Our defense gave up a lot of points last season because they were on
the field an inordinate amount of time because the offense couldn't
move the ball. So I expected the OL to be addressed more than it was.
Defense needed help, no doubt, but the offense was in more dire need.

Enh. Kick returners are like punters. You're happy to have a guy who's
great, but what you care most about is whether the guy fumbles or not.
You can pick up a servicable guy off the waiver wire or from undrafted
free agents or whatever. And the learning curve is pretty minimal, so
if they have a cruddy guy this year, they can be fine next year. CB,
OL, QB typically need a while longer to sort out and train, and you're
typically looking through a smaller pool, so when you're hurting as bad
as the Lions, you're generally better off drafting those guys instead of
returners, punters, 4th wide receivers, and other guys you can typically
plug in if and when you ever get your core together.
Still, it appears that the guy can play running back too, so maybe he'll
fit into one of their gaping holes.

Steve, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree -- which is
certainly the first time THAT has ever happened!
