View Full Version : Draft
snapp44 03-07-2008, 01:40 AM I would concentrate my first picks on the right side
of the offensive line. Along with helping the QB get
the ball to Roy and CJ an upgraded OL would help the
defence by affecting the time of posession and helping
to keep them off the field. I would like to get a
"Franchise RT/RG" and then go Defense.

We need an RB as well to go along with the RT/RG.

I think this has been a constant refrain since the black year Utley and
Andolsek went down. They've tried: Gibson, McDougle, Backus all first round
choices. Guards seem to get no respect: the Lions, at least, don't draft
them very often. But the question I see is are the Lions unable to analyze
OL talent? Or are they unable to properly use talent that they draft? I
suspect it's the former, and it's probably a combination.
With the loss of sometimes phenom Rogers, the Lions have to start their D at
the line, I think. The greatest DBs in the league can't stop a mediocre QB
if he has leisure to pick his targets and set. Over the years the only way
the Lions ever beat Favre was to put him on his ass time after time.
Without that solid, sometimes spectacular, DL, there's no real hope. The
good thing about drafting linemen is that their careers tend to be longer
than the average. Probably because their collisions aren't at full speed
like the skill guys.
I guess I'm saying I agree, though I've seen nothing over the last decade
that leads me to believe the Lions can find and use a tackle or guard. And
though it would be fun to see a great backfield, they need to start from the
ground floor.

Scouting Departments are what mistify me. Wouldn't you, as a
fan, like to know who recommended J. Hartings? Also, the
numbnuts who recommended A. Gipson, etc? If we as fans knew those
details about the intricate (or not) workings of that part
of the organization couldn't we make better judgements about
where the core faults lie? Who has been in there the longest
and what has been his recommendations? Is nepotism the secret
to why we have such a dismal drafting record (long before Millen)?
Wait, maybe there's too much of a turn over and not enough qualified
scouts? I just wish I knew more. Wouldn't it be great to read
a book by someone who infiltrated the Lions Scouting Department?
An expose'. What would be the Title? How about "Garbage-In-Garbage-Out"
I just wish I knew. I just wish...........??????

No kidding. The RB situation stinks. I'd grab Mendenhall at 15 and
then work on the OL and DEF after that. The OL definitley needs
improvement, but with the crap backs they currently have it wouldn't
improve the offense much. They'll still be stuck throwing every down
and that won't help the defense at all.

Backus and Raiola were the last serious OL picks by the Lions, and that was
going on seven years ago.
The OL is roughly a fifth of their roster and they've had 20 1st-3rd round
picks since then -- all used for other spots. I think it's pretty clear
that for whatever reason Millen has made a conscious decision that the OL
just isn't a priority, for reasons I'm not sure about considering how poor
to awful the OL has been all this time.
