View Full Version : Trade Oden for Beasley
If the Blazers are smart they will trade Oden to any team that
acquires the #1 pick in the 2008 draft. It is a virtual certainty Oden
will be plagued by major injuries throughout his career. Oden is a
quality individual but he is biologically snake-bit. The handwriting
is on the wall. The Blazers need to face reality and cut their losses
with Oden. If the Blazers draft Beasley they will have a solid
foundation for multiple NBA championships over the next 10 years. A
lineup of Roy - Aldridge - Beasley will be a valid reason for Blazers
fans to rejoice.

It's a "virtual certainty" that a broken wrist and MF (which in all
probability, he didn't really need) is a virtual certainty?

So if this graffiti on the wall you have been pounding your head against
is a 'virtual certainty' why would the team with the #1 pick trade for
Oden?
And if the other team would jump on getting Oden as is more likely, then it
shows how dumb your notion is...
your choice...

The Blazers need to shop Oden to the team with the top draft choice in
the hope that their general manager is stupid enough to make the
trade. Never underestimate the idiocy of some NBA teams. Believe it or
not, an NBA franchise once made the imbecilic decision to draft Sam
Bowie instead of Michael Jordan.

A choice that only looks bad in hindsight. Just in case you really don't
know, Portland had a young, talented guy named Drexler at the time & Bowie
was touted as the big man we needed in the middle. Although it's seldom
mentioned, Akeem, later to be known as Hakeem, also was picked ahead of
Jordan & while he enjoyed an All-Star career himself, it's hard to imagine
Houston would not have won more than 2 NBA titles with MJ instead.
At any rate, you keep thinking that Oden is another Bowie & we'll see who's
laughing in 5-10 years.
Go Blazers !
Show me somebody who thinks Oden will be a better NBA player than
Michael Beasley; and I will show you somebody who knows nothing about
basketball.

I have heard a lot more stupid trade ideas from fans than all the actual
stupid trades in history
Dominant franchise centers only come along once a decade. All picks are crap

Now you not only have a crystal ball but perfect hindsight...amazing...
By MARC STEIN / The Dallas Morning News
"Nobody was expecting Michael to be the kind of player he became," said
ESPN's Dr. Jack Ramsay, coach at the time of the Portland Trail Blazers -
the team vilified most for letting His Airness slip to No. 3.
"I think his teammates in college would tell you the same thing," Ramsay
continued. "He was a very good college player. Had we known then what we now
know, I'm sure we would have drafted Michael and traded Clyde Drexler and
Jim Paxson for a center."
At North Carolina, he certainly wasn't Jordanesque. In Dean Smith's
no-frills system, Jordan rarely had the license to show just how springy
those young legs were. So the Houston Rockets, having survived a nervy coin
flip when the Blazers called tails, took Akeem Olajuwon at No. 1.
Portland, needing a big man and craving Olajuwon, heeded its doctors'
confidence in Sam Bowie and gambled on the Kentucky center at No. 2.
Chicago, at No. 3, wound up with Jordan. Rod Thorn, then the Bulls' general
manager, admits to this day that, had he been drafting at No. 1, he also
would have bypassed Jordan for Olajuwon, who hadn't yet affixed the H to his
first name.
"It was really very logical at the time," Ramsay said. "We did not have a
center, and we had Drexler and Paxson at shooting guard. We knew Drexler was
going to be something special, and with Paxson we had good two-guard
protection.
"We were in the flip with Houston, and if we won it we would have taken
Olajuwon. Patrick Ewing decided to stay in school [at Georgetown] for
another year, so we took Bowie.
"At the time, nobody ever wondered why we didn't take Michael Jordan. It was
only after the fact, at the end of that season, when Jordan established
himself. Everyone in Portland and everyone around the league recognized
Bowie was the best guy we could get."

Let's face it, we don't have the any good basketball "Experts" left on the
national scene. There are a few really good ones who have columns in
regional or stateside newspapers, a coupla good ones on TV.. But the ones on
the internet, well they're mostly a buncha bandwagon jumpers and stone age
know it alls. That's why ever since draft day, reading about NBA really got
on my nerves.
Everyone is talking about potential busts and all stars. Everyone's getting
out their crystal balls, oh, almost forgot, those do not exist. If they did,
the Blazers wouldn't passed on MJ. In a move that's considered the worst
bust ever, they drafted Sam Bowie. What a lot of people don't know today, is
that back then, it was considered the right choice!! People doubted the
choice of Jordan as third over all! including the Bulls themselves. Did you
know the Bulls tried to swing a deal for MJ on draft day? more than one
trade scenario actually, involving big men, names like SIkma, Tree Rollins,
Joe Barry Carrol and Terry cummings were brought up!! The two safe choices
at that draft were Akeem and Sam Bowie. Yup the Sam Bowie.

Apples & oranges, umo. Beasley will almost certainly be an All-Star level
player in the NBA, but at 6'9" or 6'10" he is going to be a great forward
rather than a defensive stopper in the paint. Think Carmelo or McGrady;
certainly a top-tier talent, but not a game changing center like Oden.
I'm more than happy to stick with Oden & let his presence in the middle be
the signature of the Blazers for the next 8-10 years. You can enjoy
Beasley, if you get him.
Go Blazers !
People get so hung up on basketball labels like power forward and
center. A 7ft center and a 6-10 power forward is a distinction without
a significant difference. The determining factor is not the 2" height
differential; it's whether or not they can play on the front line. The
two most dominating low post defenders in NBA history were Bill
Russell (6-9) and Dennis Rodman (6-8). Ben Wallace won Defensive
Player of the Year 4 times. Big Ben is no 7 footer. There ain't no
reason why a 6-10 Michael Beasley cannot be a dominant NBA defender in
the paint.

Yes there is...a commitment to defense and an insticnt for it that might be
developed, more likely not.
Oden's defense is a known and rare...
He is 6-9 according to most of the draft sites and allready talk about if he
would be a 3 in the nba.

.. Size for PF position
.. Team play
.. Shot-selection
.. Defense
.. Focus
.. Off-court red flags
.. Attitude?
Taking a look at Beasley first, there was much concern about his defensive
awareness and effort in our first look at his game earlier in the season,
but his defensive effort has been much improved over the past few games, and
is hopefully something that will continue through conference play. There
seemed to be a lot of "going through the motions" defensively earlier in the
season with Beasley, but his aggressiveness has been much better of late,
with him getting into tougher defensive stances, contesting more outside
shots, and fighting a little harder to hold position in the post.
With that said, there is still much concern about his defensive awareness,
as even though he's clearly trying harder, he can still look like a fish out
of water here at times. He reminds of Drew Gooden a lot on the defensive
end, in that he has the length and athleticism to occasionally make some
impact plays, but can often look a little lost or confused, making some
questionable decisions and not showing the greatest awareness of what's
going on around him. It's obviously early in his development, though, and
there is much room for improvement, especially if he is going to
consistently devote the effort necessary on this end of the floor, and try
to focus more with his awareness. Consistently doing these things would take
Beasley to the next level as a prospect in the eyes of many, though it's no
sure thing that he does.
====
Beasley's decision-making on defense was also questionable at times, though,
which led to some costly blunders in the second half. On one occasion, he
failed to hedge a ball-handler on a pick-and-roll, giving the opposing guard
a wide open lane to the basket. On another, when Kansas State switched to a
zone, Beasley failed to recognize that Blake Griffin had snuck onto the
baseline in his area of the court, leading to a wide-open put-back. Late in
the game, Beasley had a lot of problems guarding Griffin in fact, especially
after Kansas State made a strange strategic decision to have Beasley front
Griffin in the post with no other big man on the floor to cover his back
side. This led to Beasley committing some fouls and over-playing entry
passes, leading to a wide open Griffin rolling to the rim for a dunk.
==================
We've seen a fair share of Beasley-esque plays where he forces the issue
and tries to do too much out on the perimeter (for example an ill-advised
double-clutch pull-up fadeaway jumper), but he's been able to make up for
his mistakes largely by just rebounding his own misses and putting them back
in. Beasley was known to be somewhat of a selfish player in high school at
times, and from what we could tell from the game footage we evaluated early
on, he's not quite shedding that label quite yet. The ball-movement often
stops once it reaches his hands, and oftentimes it seems like he is going to
take the ball at shoot it no matter what, regardless of how the play
develops around him. That's something some NBA scouts won't mind at all,
while others will hope he'll grow out of as he continues to mature.
Defensively, there is absolutely no way around the fact that Beasley has
looked awful so far--not really a surprise considering his reputation coming
into college. Even when he tries to put in a legit effort, he looks
unfocused--almost completely lost-- constantly out of position, and too
often caught with his hand in the cookie jar gambling for steals. He doesn't
always put in that legit effort, though, as it's not rare to see him looking
a bit lazy running the floor to get back, particularly in transition
situations. Again, some scouts will shake their heads at these types of
things, while others will chalk it up to youth and inexperience.

NBA Comparison: Carmelo Anthony
Strengths: Incredibly diverse and refined offensive game . Strong
inside/outside skills ... From the block, he can give you a drop step, jump
hook, and/or fade-away . He can post up 15 feet out and take his man off the
dribble, pop a J in the defender's eye, take a fade-away, or find a cutting
teammate . He can catch and shoot from anywhere out to 25 feet .
Weaknesses: Maturity. Some feel that he has an attitude problem, and lacks
the discipline to be coached ... A year under Bob Huggins should help him
considerably ... Defense and effort. He occasionally coasts through entire
games. There is a theory that he is so much better than his competition that
he gets bored

Laurel beat me to the reasons, but the biggest one is Beasley doesn't want
to play D, he wants to be an offensive highlight reel.

The character issue is by far the strongest argument against trading
Oden for Beasley, A young man's character is forged in the crucible of
his formative years between age 10 and 15. It's too late to
fundamentally change a despicable 18 year old.

Well I found nothing on 'despicable' more to prangster but also perhaps a
poor attitude for the team concept in Portland.

Hi ya beau.
If the city wins it's law suit to make the sonics stay though 2010, do you
think the local group with bucks to burn will be able to talk the Okie
Bennett into selling them the team? He would be facing big losses for two
more years and the hornets might be available.... faint hope?

I didn't think about that, thats an interesting angle. I don't really
like the idea of any teams moving, but New Orleans has been a mistake

Move the Hornets to OK (or share them maybe...25 games in OK, 17 in
NO?) and move the Grizz to Vegas or KC.

Bennett says he has no interest in selling. OKC just passed a sales tax to
re-vamp their arena about 60-40. 3 local big money Seattle guys are willing
to put out 300 mil(half what is needed) to re-vamp the Key if they can buy
the team. But have to see how the law suit goes for him to look at the
bottom line. Looking at a nice profit while knowing he would lose big for
several more years might change Bennett's mind.
Bennett has already applied for the move and if the owners approve he would
have priority unless he sold the team or withdrew.

Not sure if Shinn would sell the hornets but Bennett could have a franchise
ready now to win and likely count on post season profits.
Shinn signed an extension of his sweetheart deal with NOLA with an opt out
if they do not get some minimun attendence.
Grizz should be tossed out of the league.

Hi Laurel. Seems to me the idea is scorched Earth strategy to get the
partners of Clay to cave in...force them to make a move for the
Hornets..etc.
And congrats you are the first one to answer correctly regarding the secret
identity. As far as I know Steve Pyeatt is Coz. I believe he got
landslided in a local election recently.
Either way I think we will still have NBA basketball in Seattle beyond 2010.
Might not be the current franchise but some franchise. I sure would like to
see some epic Western Conference playoffs between Seattle and Portland
someday though. If we lose the NBA I don't expect that I will become a
Blazer fan regardless so the NBA is losing a real hard core fanatie here for
whatever that might be worth.

If they lose the team I doubt many hard core sonic fans will become Blazer
fans.
On the other hand mild fans and basketball fans in general might.
Because I expect that Allen will get the TV rights to the Seattle market
while they have no team.

No idea. They aren't dumb people and I am sure they didn't come into it
this late figuring on getting legislative movement but it does seem to me
that this group presents a point that the NBA has to look at. Here is a
local group interested in the local facility and community involvement. And
Seattle should jump all over their part because without the Sonics I expect
that within a decade Seattle Center as we know it..is gone. Imagine Seattle
with no Space Needle. Without the Center the Space Needle would be oddly
located.

If the league is really smart they retain the Seattle market as a trust
until something else is worked out. Portland just doesn't pull interst from
Olympia on north at all.

Well they are not smart they like money and they know for awhile it might be
hard for a team to move to Seattle.
I do not see the owners voting it down.
> Portland just doesn't pull

Not quite the same situation but Sonics got the Vancouver market when the
Grizz left IIRC.
If the blazers went back to Fox NW in a couple of years, it would just be a
matter of no longer blacking out the market and relieve them of having to
run alternate programing.
Blazers could get more for the rights and FNW could charge more for their
ads with even a small increase in market and Seattle has 3 times as many TV
households. And the ratings couold not be any worse than the old reruns of
greats sports wrecks they use to black out the sonics games at my place...
If no local stations picked up the rest of the KGW games or had low ratings
and gave thenm up that would work itself out anyway as to how much interest
there is.

Big-men always get over rated. Shit, the Oklahoma Sonics picked big

That's a thought worth pondering! I have wondered why some of those
small markets couldn't maybe share a team, especially if they are not
too far apart geographically. Different sport, but back before the
construction of Safeco field in Seattle there had been some
discussions, though I'm not sure how serious, about having the
Mariners play a few home games in Portland, and maybe even a few in
Vancouver BC. I think the talk was like 51 games in Seattle, 15 in
Portland, 15 in Vancouver. The theory then was that it would bring in
more money by expanding the market of the team.
I'm thinking a few NBA teams could look into such a plan.

I'm thinkin' Portland could really cash in on the Sonics leaving
Seattle. The Blazers will become the only team in the northwest and
will probably have games aired throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho,
maybe even parts of Montana. I wish they would put the Blazer games
on up here now! I'd like to get used to rooting for the Blazers and
seeing them on TV.

Why do people keep insisting people in the Seattle area, or Washington
in general, wont support the Blazers? Sure, they haven't over the
years because it's a rivalry and people normally support their home
team. BUT, imagine no team in Seattle. Portland is the closest team,
and with no rivalry up here people will just turn to the Blazers!
It's just like baseball or football, Portland doesn't have major
league baseball or NFL football so they support the Mariners and
Seahawks. Do you really think Seattle fans are gonna keep rooting
for the Sonics when they become the Oklahoma Sonics? I don't think so
eh! I think the Sonics will have a new rivalry with New Orleans. It
will be the team Gay Bennett bought against the team he should have
bought! The Northwest Divsion is so spread out it's almost hard to
think of a natural rivalry for the Blazers with the Sonics gone.
Denver? Utah? Minnesota?
Most of the divisions have really logical teams. I guess the
Northwest just gets screwed because there isn't many teams close
together. And moving the Sonics just makes it worse.

I've been a Padres & Chargers fan since the 70s, but since the Seahawks
moved to the NFC & the Mariners are an AL club, I kind of pull for them,
except when they're playing the Pads or Bolts of course.
I liked it better when the Hawks were AFC as I could see the Bolts once a
year in person, but that game a couple seasons ago at Qwest was awesome.
: )
Go Blazers ! (Pads & Bolts too)

Those aren't sports fans! Their opinion isn't relevant to this
conversation. Portland doesn't have baseball or football, true fans
of those sports will support Mariners and Seahawks unless they are
just some bandwagon riding traitors who think it's cool to support the
Yankees and the Patriots.

Well, we agree to disagree! I can't possibly see how someone can
honestly support the team under the circumstances they are leaving.
I'm pissed that Howard Shultz put the team up for sale so quickly and
didn't give a chance for local buyers to assemble, but I'm equally
pissed at Clay Bennett for lying to Seattle fans saying he would make
every effort to keep the team in the Seattle market and then he just
shit on us. I can't support the Sonics anymore because they don't
value my support enough to stay here. Portland is so much closer than
Oklahoma City, and I don't give a rats ass about Oklahoma. Plus the
Blazers are owned by Paul Allen who is a Seattleite!

so I'm not a "sports fan" or a "true" fan because I don't give a shit
about the Mariners (I'm a Boston fan, and a Braves and Padres fan) and
the Seahawks (don't care)?
Here's a way not to get me to be a fan of the Seahawks...When Paul
Allen bought them, he started putting them on KXL, sometimes *ahead*
of Blazer games or shows. Despite we're in Portland.
And they used to do a "Hawk Talk" monday nights during the dedicated
Blazers talk show.
And then you have the fact (not rumor, FACT) that the Mariners
organization tried to submarine Portlands attempt to get an MLB team?
Fuck em.

lol...when there is no team in your state (or even if there is) you are
certainly not required to take the closest one.
In my area most are California Bay Area team fans because those were the
ones we got on TV for many years.
I am a casual fan of the seashawks but sleep though baseball games.
I love that in 24 hours a member of a team has to switch loyalty (it is even
in the contract) while a fan is evil for rooting for another team.

As you & Dan point out so well, there are many reasons fans choose "their"
teams besides geography. One has to wonder what MD will do when his team
become The Okies. : )

I just don't understand how you can call a team 3000 miles away your
team. I would agree with you that it sucks if KXL airs seahawks shit
when the Blazers should be on. Why can't a different station handle
the different sports? Up here in Seattle the Sonics, Mariners, and
Seahawks are all on seperate stations so we don't have that problem.
By the way, I'm not a seahawks fan either, but because I don't like
football. If I did I would root for them. There's other baseball and
basketball teams I like, but usually its based on certain collections
of players playing together, like the Celtics this year with Garnett,
Allen, and Pierce.
I also like the Pistons, who don't have a true star player, but they
play well as a team. In baseball I like the Red Sox, Braves, Padres,
Angels. But I root for my hometown teams above all else, and since
the Sonics are stickin their middle finger up to Seattle I'm rootin'
for the Blazers!

Don't get me wrong, I never said people can't root for far away
teams. I just don't understand favoring them over the home, or
closest team. Yes, I'm aware before Seattle got the Mariners the Bay
Area teams were the closest teams, and were shown on tv here. I
suspect before the Blazers and Sonics came on the scene it must have
been similar, I don't remember.

I didn't say they were "my" team, I said I was a fan of them. The
Braves because of TBS and I grew up during the time of Braves games on
TBS and WTBS being prominent on TV. The Red Sox because I hate the
Yankees, and liked some of the Portland connections that the Sox had.
As for the Padres, my sister and her husband and their 3 kids live
there. So I'm a fan byproxy.

I know I'm not the first, or only Seattle area fan to root for the

I heard that the only reason Gay Bennett is getting away with this
team heist is because he sleeps with David Stern, and it has always
been Sterns dream to have a team right in the middle of the fuckin
country, regardless of market size or whatever. I heard that Gay
Bennett is gonna declare the Oklahoma Cowpuckies Americas team!
That's ridiculous!
