If I had to file state income taxes in 17 states, I'd likely screw it
up too. At least he coughed up the $70,000 voluntarily when he
discovered it. Pretty much chump change for him though so not
particularly painful.

They've discovered a strange but useful creature in the universe
called accountants. I've heard if you give them stuff they'll do
your ciphering for you.

Let me get this straight. "Tax the hell out of the rich" Franken
has a scheme that spreads his business over 17 states to avoid
taxes, AND rsfcks it up?

Duh. The article said Franken used one of them accountants to do his
ciphering. The accountant screwed it up. Probably used a times instead
of a gozinta. You kind of take it on faith that the accountant knows
what he's doing, but obviously he didn't in this case.

After I butchered an Uncle Sam return two years in a row (same mistake
both times - didn't get caught for the first until I did it twice), I
use an accountant to do my ciphering these days.
