Default Boston and Orlando -rollin'

The high intensity and energy displayed by both Boston and the Orlando
Magic is the effort and concentration that the Pistons should have
utilized. I mean, those two teams took care of business. Both sent
early messages and inserted a feared dominance not illustrated since the
days of Magic Johnson's Lakers.

Garnett was impressive....and Howard even more impressive with his 22
boards over the Raptors.

I don't quite think the Orlando Magic are quite as dominant as the Showtime
Lakers. Call me crazy but I think your statement might just be an
exaggeration.

The Magic finished off the Raptors tonight, while Boston and Detroit
are struggling with 7th and 8th seed teams.

Look out eastern conference, Dwight Howard and the Magic are coming
for you!

Good grief, Orlando just made it out of the first round for the first
time in team history, by beating a team that (I believe) has never
made it out of the first round, and suddenly they are the next
Showtime Lakers?

Orlando is a good solid team: Howard is, obviously, a stud; speaking
as someone who had Hedo T. on my NBA fantasy team, I think he deserves
his Most Improved player award; and Rashard Lewis has skills also.
But let's not get carried away. They still play Carlos Arroyo and
Maurice Evans, for gosh sakes. Detroit will have to play better and
more consistently to beat the Magic in the next round (assuming
Detroit gets past Philly), but I still believe they will.

Boston's struggles with Atlanta are arguably stranger than Detroit's
struggles with Philly, but that's why you play the games. -- Joe

Where did *I* write that they were the next "Showtime Lakers"?

I'm just a Magic fan that *finally* has something to be happy about
ever since they made the foolish mistake of letting Shaq go.

Also, in the 94-95 season they were defeated by the Rockets in the NBA
finals. In 95-96 season they were defeated by the Bulls in the eastern
conf finials. (arguably the best team ever with a 72-10 regular
season) Then it was bye-bye Shaq, and they have sucked ever since.

So were are you getting this "it's the first time they have ever made
it out of the 1st rd stuff"? From the idiot that made the same comment
during their game last night?

I'm just saying, hardly anyone in the media gave the Magic any credit
this yr and they are now sitting at home resting.

BTW, looks like the Celtics got bitten by the Patriot bug (LOL!)

First, you are absolutely right and I was absolutely wrong about the
Magic's team history in terms of getting out of the first round. I
was probably thinking about Howard getting out of the first round for
the first time, but that's not what I wrote: my bad.

Second, congrats on rooting for an exciting and improving Magic team.
And if you see Hedo, thank him for helping my fantasy team this past
year.

Third, however, you wrote that the play of Orlando and Boston
"inserted a feared dominance not illustrated since the
days of Magic Johnson's Lakers." That does sound like a comparison
to the Lakers, and I don't think it's apt in either case. Mabye
people were afraid of Boston after the first two games, but (i) not as
much now, and (ii) even after game 2, not as much as people were
afraid of the Showtime Lakers.

And seriously, even after Orlando advanced to the second round this
year, do you really think anyone in the league thought the Magic were
as dominant as the Lakers, or feared the Magic as much as the old
Lakers were feared, or anything like that? Rightly or wrongly, the
favorites to come out of the East are still Boston, Detroit, and the
Cavs, in that order. And rightly or wrongly, it's not clear any of
them would be favored (or more feared) than the Lakers or Spurs this
year.

Assuming the Pistons meet the Magic, I think it will be a good
series. But honestly, I think the Magic will fear the Pistons more
than vice-versa. -- Joe

Slater! Cut the guy some slack -- he didn't write that bit about the old
Lakers, that was Anita Darling. Check the posts a little more carefully.

For the benefit of the Orlando fan, the poster Slater got confused about,
rdjio@webtv.net, is a guy who sometimes pretends to be former UTenn
player Reggie Johnson and sometimes pretends to be a girl named Anita
Darling http://community-2.webtv.net/AnitaCotillier/AnitaDarling/

The webtv user is certifiably nuts -- he believes that UFOs built the
Sphinx and buried satan in the great pyramids and that Mars is inhabited
by the Keebler elves or something like that.

If you want to see some of his insane posts, check out this link

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.sports.basketball.nba.det-
pistons/msg/3ce90febb8c6e824

Or look in Google Groups for "Anita Darling" -- looks like he's been
posting a lot of his wacked out stuff recently.

You have confused my comments with the OP as far as the Showtime
Lakers. There isn't any team in the NBA right now that is as good as
they were.

Concerning the Magic and the east, they are a young team, and if I've
learned anything about the Magic over the yrs, it's not get my hopes
up. At this point in time, I'm just glad they *finally* made it to the
second rd.

Maybe they advance to the third rd, maybe they don't, but they are a
dangerous team for the 3 favorites that you mentioned, especially if
their 3 pt shooting is on. The Magic have *nothing* to lose and there
is no pressure on them. And like I said, they are the *only* EC team
sitting at home resting right now.

Thanks for the clarification about the Showtime Lakers.
