If the Maloney.that we have now is like the Maloney. we had in the 60s as in
Jim Maloney. 98 to 100 MPH fastball What does this Maloney Look like what
are his Stats? Sorry to be a pain but I just haven't had time to look it
up.

Maloney, Valquez, Bailey and Cueto all pitch differently, but the results
are almost the same. They're all young with decent strikeout rates.

Bailey has the best press and pedigree. He has pitched at a higher level,
but got hurt last year. (It was a groin thing, so it doesn't point to arm
trouble)
Maloney pitched the most innings and is probably the most "stretched out"
meaning that if one of them were to throw 180+ good innings as a starter
this year, he would be the likely choice.
Valquez has friends in the front office who need him to succeeed and, I
believe, is out of options so will have to stay with the big club.
Cueto probably pitched like the devil himself in winter ball and probably
has a little bit better National press than Bailey.

Now, that doesn't mean that all four of these guys will develop, but it's
nice to dream.

For the first time that I can remember the reds have an excess of young
starting pitching....and the reds have Dusty " the arm shredder" Baker as
the manager.

here's something I posted two weeks ago...

I did this earlier in the offseason, Sorry about the formatting.....I've
computed some ratios based on the time spend at the AA and AAA levels last
year. Can you tell who is who?

How old Innings Innings at K/9 ERA WHIP
will they be Total AA/AAA

22 A 161 83 10.6 3.14 1.048
24 B 170 170 9.4 3.65 1.165
22 C 112 67.3 7.9 3.88 1.203
24 D 179 109.3 10.5 2.55 1.015

If you can tell me which is which, from that, power to you.

Just to make it easier....
Pitcher C got hurt. Spent sometime in MLB and in A ball.
Pitcher D spent some time ...well he was all over the map.

I had a few hours to spare so I was able to find this link:

???

Didn't Baseball America rate Bailey something like the 8th best prospect
in baseball or something (with Bruce being 2nd)?

Here's a BBA Top 100 list from a year ago. Bailey is rated the #4
prospect in all of baseball (Cueto does not appear):

That is correct./

Bailey needs to be traded for a 30 year old left-handed batting
outfield

Just what the Reds need at this point.

Hope the Reds are in serious talks with teasm concering Bailey at
this point.

Of course, they could trade him to Wahsington for Audtin Kearns!

Being VERY sarcastic here, before the flood of supporters/dissentors
converge here!

We all know he is washed up at age 22/>

Things change...From the yahoo article that oragnedude just put up

"Certainly Cueto, the 22-year-old Dominican who the Reds now value higher
than Bailey, is a better option than journeyman Josh Fogg, to whom
Cincinnati committed $1 million Thursday. "
Little things like that are all over the place.

Matt Maloney - no relation to Jim as far as I can determine - is 6'4",
220 pounds, bats and throws left, and will be 24 as the coming season
starts. Fastball in the 86-89 range, some sort of sinker/slider type
of pitch, big, looping curve with an 11-5 break, change that is
probably his second best pitch (after the heater) and which he's not
afraid to use. His pitches aren't outstanding but his command is, and
therefore, his results have been also:

Low-A: 3.89 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 36/15 K/BB ratio in 37 IP

High-A: 2.02 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 180/73 K/BB ratio in 169 IP.

Double-A: 3.69 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 154/48 K/BB ratio in 153.2 IP

Triple-A: 3.18 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 23/6 K/BB ratio in 17 innings.

Career minor league 3.4 BB/9 and 9.4 K/9, with a GB% over 40%,
probably due in no small part to that sinker/slider he throws.

From looking at his mlb.com scouting video:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2005/tracker/search.jsp?sc=team&sp=phi

....I notice he was kind of throwing across his body, and was falling
toward third base, but that's usually a matter of footwork and ought
to be fixable. In fact that's his draft scouting video, so they may
have already corrected that since he got in pro ball. I haven't
actually seen him throw more recently.

Other than that, in the video he was working from a 3/4-arm slot with
a relatively straight leg kick that stayed on his glove side. I don't
see any violent movements or glaring flaws that would cause me to
worry about injury (and if *I* can spot it you'd have to think it's
pretty obvious, because I'm certainly no expert on pitching
mechanics).

Although most of what I can find on him via the Internet has him
slotted as a back end of the rotation type, I think he's eventually
going to be a good #3 starter in the majors. Then again, I've been
wrong before.

JK
