When he returns he absolutely must be placed in the 5th or even 6th slot.
It's obvious that the top of the order is working well with Johnson/Fontenot/Theriot. Putting Soriano in the 1 or 2 hole will mess things up. I could see moving Fukadome to the 2hole and putting Soriano in the 5 hole. We can afford one free swinger in the lineup but not at the top of the lineup. It may turn out that Soriano going on the 15-day DL was a blessing-in-disguise. I think Lou now has the confirmation he needed and evidence to support moving Soriano where he belongs in the lineup. |

Moving Fukadome to batting second would be a mistake. Batting fifth he
breaks up a lineup that is righthanded dominate, three through eigth and gives you a tough out between your sluggers. He also provides cover for Ramirez. Yesterday the Mets used three reliefers in the eigth ining and still got burned. If you look at the past week and what Fukadome has done to start or contribute to rallies. Johnson or Theriot handle the bat and either would make a decent number two hitter. He is to valuable in the fifth spot. -- Message posted using http://www.talkaboutbaseball.com/group/alt.sports.baseball.chicago-cubs/ More information at http://www.talkaboutbaseball.com/faq.html |

I can't see him being that far down in the lineup although it makes the most sense. Perhaps moving Fukadome to 6th would be more realistic. |

Soriano has been an All-Star leadoff man in both leagues. Every drop in
lineup position costs him 20 at-bats per year. When Reed Johnson and Ryan Theriot make the All-Star team it might be time to move Soriano to 6th in the order. His OBP is not good for a lead-off man. He hasn't been an all-star because he's batted lead-off. He's been an all-star because of his production. What he loses in AB per year he will gain in RBIs which is more important to the TEAM than his ABs. |

I guess it all comes down to where Soriano feels more comfortable batting and where, therefore, management feels he will be most productive. |
