Recently I was in a game of eight-ball and my opponent called a straight-in
shot to a corner pocket. When he hit the object ball it bounced out of the pocket, rolled 3 rails and ended up potted in the pocket he called anyway. Is this a legal shot? He insisted it was. Seems to me it wasn't since his original intent was to hit the object ball straight into the pocket with no rail. Who's right?? |

By WPA/BCA/ACS rules, if he called the ball and pocket, it is a legal
shot ... However, if they were just playing "Bar Rules," often incorrectly referred to as "Straight 8," then you must call ALL kisses/caroms and rails that are to occur in the course of the shot -- any variation from what is called is not considered legal. In this case "Frustrated ..." would be RIGHT, and his opponent LOST by illegally pocketing the 8, his opponent not having called the extra rails before his shot. Still, "Frustrated ..." nonetheless LOSES this argument, regardless of the actual rule to be applied in this situation, because he failed to clarify beforehand what set of rules were to be used. Bar Rules vary somewhat from place-to-place. So, if you're unfamiliar with the place, or you're unfamiliar with your opponent, ALWAYS clarify the rules IN ADVANCE -- TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED!!! If you DON'T wish to "insult" your opponent by first clarifying rules, then you must take your lumps and learn in graduated steps via the "positive/negative reinforcement" method ... ;->. Remember, it's only a game! Unless, of course, you're playing for serious money -- in which case, you're a fool for not getting rules clarification IN ADVANCE and THEN, if you don't like the rules, you can effectively decide whether or not it's worth it to play. If playing by BCA|WPA|VNEA|TAP|APA rule sets, it's a call pocket game, meaning if you make a legal shot (hit one of your balls first for example) then you only need to call the pocket, not all the wonderful things it happens to do on the way to the pocket. Well, APA you don't even need to call a pocket, any time one of your balls falls in any pocket any where (except the 8) you keep on shooting. -- Jack http://jbstein.com |

I once played in a tournament of "straight 8" bar rules. But, your ball could touch the rail if it touched it one diamond before the pocket (shooting down the rail). Strange to say the least. Most of the "league" rules are put in place to avoid such arguments, therefore, if the ball goes in the called pocket, it is good. Hank <~~~ has seen some weird rules |

Let me guess, it cost you a whole 50 cents. Suck it up, and agree on which rules you are playing by before you start the next game.... -- http://improve-usenet.org |

Most leagues you'll have a a good shot and a win.
Most bars, if you claim it's a good shot, you'll leave with broken thumbs.
